Standing Forward Fold (Uttanasana)

Category: YogaTarget: hamstringsBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: beginnerMovement: Stretch

Standing forward fold is a foundational yoga posture that targets the hamstrings and lower back through a gravity-assisted stretch. It involves hinging forward from standing with a long spine, allowing the torso to hang toward the floor to release tension in the posterior chain.

How to do it

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and hands on your hips.
  2. Inhale to lengthen your spine, then exhale and hinge forward at the hips, folding your torso toward your legs.
  3. Allow your head and neck to relax and let gravity draw your torso toward the floor.
  4. Reach your hands to the floor, your shins, or your ankles depending on your flexibility.
  5. Hold the position for 30-60 seconds, then press your feet into the floor and slowly roll up to standing.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale to lengthen your torso, and exhale slowly as you fold deeper into the stretch.

Frequently asked questions

What if I cannot reach the floor?

That is perfectly fine. Place your hands on your shins or thighs instead, or use yoga blocks to bring the floor closer to you.

Should my knees be straight?

Keep a soft, micro-bend in your knees. This protects your joints and helps you focus the stretch on your hamstrings rather than behind the knee.

Where should I feel this stretch?

You should feel a gentle pulling sensation along the back of your thighs. If you feel sharp pain in your back, ease out of the fold immediately.
