Hand-to-big-toe Pose (Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana)

Category: YogaTarget: hamstringsBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: intermediateMovement: Balance

Hand-to-big-toe pose is a standing balance posture that targets the hamstrings through an active standing stretch. It involves grasping the big toe and extending one leg forward while maintaining balance on the standing leg, improving hamstring flexibility and core stability.

How to do it

  1. Stand in mountain pose with your weight balanced on both feet.
  2. Shift your weight to your left foot and bend your right knee, lifting it toward your chest.
  3. Grasp your right big toe with your right index and middle fingers.
  4. Slowly extend your right leg forward until it is as straight as comfortable.
  5. Hold the balance for 20-30 seconds, then bend the knee and release, repeating on the other side.

Form cues

Breathing: Breathe steadily through your nose. Avoid holding your breath, as it increases tension and makes balancing more difficult.

Frequently asked questions

What if I cannot reach my big toe?

Use a yoga strap or a towel around your foot to bridge the gap while keeping your back straight.

Why do I feel wobbly?

Balancing is a skill that improves with practice. Engage your core and focus on a non-moving point on the wall.

Should my leg be perfectly straight?

Only if you can maintain good posture. It is better to have a slightly bent knee with a straight back than a straight leg with a rounded back.
