Seated forward fold is a bodyweight stretching exercise targeting the hamstrings. Folding the torso over straight legs from a seated position provides a deep stretch along the entire posterior chain, from hamstrings to calves.

How to do it

  1. Sit on the floor with both legs extended straight in front of you.
  2. Sit tall and reach your arms forward toward your feet.
  3. Hinge from the hips and fold your torso forward as far as comfortable.
  4. Hold the position for 20-30 seconds, breathing deeply.
  5. Slowly return to the upright seated position and repeat.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale to sit tall and lengthen your spine, then exhale gently as you hinge forward into the stretch.

Frequently asked questions

What if I cannot reach my toes?

That is completely normal for beginners. Simply reach as far as comfortable, such as your shins or ankles, without forcing your back to round.

How often should I do this stretch?

You can practice this stretch daily, especially after a walk or a workout when your muscles are warm.

Should I feel pain during the stretch?

You should feel a gentle, dull tension in the back of your legs, never sharp or shooting pain. Ease off immediately if it hurts.
