Airplane Pose (Dekasana)

Category: YogaTarget: lower backBody part: backEquipment: body weightLevel: intermediateMovement: Balance

Airplane pose is a standing balance posture that targets the lower back while engaging the glutes, hamstrings, and shoulders. It involves balancing on one leg while extending the torso and opposite leg parallel to the floor, improving stability and posterior chain strength.

How to do it

  1. Stand tall with your feet together and arms extended out to the sides at shoulder height.
  2. Shift your weight onto your right foot and hinge forward at the hips, lifting your left leg straight behind you.
  3. Continue tilting your torso forward until your body forms a straight line parallel to the floor.
  4. Keep your arms extended wide and your gaze slightly forward to help with balance.
  5. Hold the position for 20-30 seconds, then slowly return to standing and repeat on the other side.

Form cues

Breathing: Maintain steady, rhythmic breaths; avoid holding your breath as it increases tension.
