Fold with Hinge

Category: WorkoutsTarget: hamstringsBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: beginnerMovement: Hinge

Fold with hinge is a bodyweight mobility exercise targeting the hamstrings, with secondary engagement of the glutes and lower back. It combines a controlled hip hinge with a forward fold to dynamically stretch the posterior chain and improve hip mobility.

How to do it

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and a slight bend in your knees.
  2. Hinge forward at the hips, pushing your hips backward while keeping your back flat and chest lifted.
  3. Lower your torso until you feel a deep stretch in your hamstrings, then allow your torso to round gently into a full forward fold.
  4. Hold the folded position for 2-3 seconds, then re-engage your core and hinge back up to standing.
  5. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you stand tall and prepare to move, exhale slowly as you hinge and fold forward, and breathe naturally while holding the stretch.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if I feel this in my lower back instead of my hamstrings?

Try bending your knees slightly more and focus on pushing your hips backward rather than reaching down with your hands.

How often can I practice the fold with hinge?

You can safely include this mobility movement in your daily routine or as part of your warm-up before other workouts.

Do I need to touch my toes?

Not at all. Focus on the stretch in the back of your thighs rather than how far down your hands can reach.
