Walking Lunge

Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: beginnerMovement: Lunge

Walking lunges are a dynamic bodyweight lower body exercise targeting the quads, glutes, and hamstrings through continuous forward lunging steps. They build single-leg strength, coordination, and balance simultaneously.

How to do it

  1. Stand upright with feet together and hands on your hips or at your sides.
  2. Step your right foot forward and lower your body by bending both knees.
  3. Lower your back knee toward the floor without touching it.
  4. Push through your right foot and bring your left foot forward to step into the next lunge.
  5. Continue walking forward for the desired number of steps or distance.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you step forward and lower your body, and exhale as you push back up to standing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop losing my balance?

Focus your gaze on a fixed point ahead of you, and avoid placing your feet on a tightrope line; keep them hip-width apart.

Should my back knee touch the floor?

Ideally, it should hover just an inch above the floor. Lightly brushing is fine, but do not rest your weight on the ground.

Where should I feel this exercise?

You should feel your quadriceps (front of thighs) and glutes working. Mild muscle fatigue is normal, but stop if you feel sharp joint pain.
