Dumbbell Walking Lunges

Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: dumbbellLevel: intermediateMovement: Lunge

Dumbbell walking lunges are a dynamic lower body exercise targeting the quads, glutes, and hamstrings. Moving continuously forward with dumbbells adds load and increases the demand on the core and lower body compared to stationary lunges.

How to do it

  1. Stand with feet hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. Step forward with one foot and lower your back knee toward the ground.
  3. Ensure both knees are at approximately 90 degrees at the bottom of the lunge.
  4. Push through your front heel and step the rear foot forward into the next lunge.
  5. Continue walking forward in a lunge pattern for the desired number of steps.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you step forward and lower down, and exhale firmly as you push back up to standing.

Frequently asked questions

Should my back knee touch the floor on every step?

It can lightly brush the floor, but it is better to stop an inch or two above it to keep tension on your muscles and protect your kneecap.

What should I do if I struggle with balance?

Try taking slightly wider steps side-to-side to widen your base of support, or practice without weights first.

Can I do these in a small space?

Yes, if space is limited, you can turn around when you run out of room or switch to stationary reverse lunges.
