Step-ups (Weighted)

Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: dumbbellLevel: intermediateMovement: Lunge

Weighted step-ups are a unilateral compound exercise targeting the quadriceps and glutes. Stepping up onto an elevated surface with added dumbbell resistance builds single-leg strength, stability, and functional lower body power.

How to do it

  1. Stand in front of a box or bench holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. Step one foot up onto the surface and drive through that heel to lift your body up.
  3. Bring your back foot up to stand fully on the box.
  4. Step the leading foot back down to the floor followed by the trailing foot.
  5. Alternate the leading leg or complete all repetitions on one side before switching.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you lower yourself down with control, and exhale as you drive up to the top of the box.

Frequently asked questions

What height should the box be?

Start with a height where your knee is at roughly a 90-degree angle when your foot is up, or lower if you feel unsteady.

How heavy should the dumbbells be?

Choose a weight that lets you complete all reps with good form without losing your balance.

Why do I feel this more in my calves than my legs?

This often happens if you push off your back toes instead of driving through the heel of your front foot.
