Step-up

Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: beginnerMovement: Lunge

The step-up is a bodyweight unilateral exercise targeting the quadriceps. Stepping up onto an elevated surface develops single-leg strength, balance, and coordination, while also engaging the glutes and hamstrings.

How to do it

  1. Stand in front of a bench or box and place one foot flat on the surface.
  2. Drive through the heel of your raised foot to step up onto the box, bringing your trailing foot up beside it.
  3. Step back down with the trailing foot first, returning to the starting position.
  4. Repeat on the same leg for the desired number of repetitions, then switch legs.

Form cues

Breathing: Exhale as you press down and step up onto the box, and inhale as you lower yourself back to the starting position.

Frequently asked questions

What height box should I use?

Start with a low box or step where your knee sits at roughly a 90-degree angle or lower. As your balance and strength improve, you can slowly increase the height.

Why do I feel this mostly in my calves or shins?

This usually happens if you push off your back toes instead of driving through the heel of your front foot. Focus on keeping your front foot entirely flat on the box.

How often can I do step-ups?

2 to 3 times per week is a great starting point, allowing at least 48 hours of rest between lower body sessions.
