Weighted Step-up

Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: beginnerMovement: Lunge

The weighted step-up is a unilateral lower body exercise targeting the quads and glutes through a stepping and single-leg press movement. Adding dumbbells increases the loading for progressive strength development and functional leg training.

How to do it

  1. Stand in front of a sturdy box or bench holding a dumbbell in each hand.
  2. Step your right foot onto the surface and press through your right heel to lift your body up.
  3. Bring your left foot up to stand fully on the box.
  4. Step your right foot back down, followed by your left.
  5. Continue leading with the same leg or alternate sides for the desired repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you step down and prepare, and exhale powerfully as you press up onto the box.

Frequently asked questions

How high should the box be for weighted step-ups?

A box or sturdy bench that places your knee at about a 90-degree angle when your foot is on top is ideal for most beginners.

What if I feel this more in my knees than my quads?

Make sure you are driving through your front heel and that your knee is tracking in line with your toes rather than caving inward.

Can I do this exercise without weights?

Yes, you can practice the bodyweight version first to master your balance and form before adding dumbbells.
