Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: dumbbellLevel: intermediateMovement: Lunge

The dumbbell single leg step up is a dumbbell unilateral exercise targeting the quadriceps. The added load of the dumbbells increases lower body strength demand and helps develop balanced muscular strength between legs.

How to do it

  1. Stand in front of a box or bench holding a dumbbell in each hand.
  2. Place one foot flat on the box.
  3. Drive through the heel of your elevated foot to step up, bringing your other foot onto the box.
  4. Step back down with the trailing foot first.
  5. Repeat on the same leg for the desired number of repetitions, then switch.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you stand tall on the box, and exhale as you lower yourself back down with control.

Frequently asked questions

What height should the box be?

Start with a box or sturdy bench where your knee bends at roughly a 90-degree angle when your foot is placed flat on top.

Why do I feel this more in my calves than my quads?

This usually happens if you push off your trailing foot or rise up onto your toes. Focus on keeping your entire front foot flat and driving through the heel.

Can I do this exercise without dumbbells?

Yes, you can perform bodyweight step-ups to master the balance and coordination before adding any external weight.
