Dumbbell Drop Step

Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: dumbbellLevel: intermediateMovement: Lunge

The dumbbell drop step is a unilateral lower body exercise that involves stepping back diagonally to challenge the quads and glutes from a different angle. It improves single-leg strength, balance, and hip stability while also engaging the core.

How to do it

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. Step one foot back and diagonally to the outside, lowering into a reverse diagonal lunge.
  3. Keep your front knee tracking over your toes and your torso upright.
  4. Drive through the front foot to return to the starting position.
  5. Repeat on the other side, alternating legs for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you step back and lower into the lunge, and exhale as you push back up to the starting position.

Frequently asked questions

What muscles does the dumbbell drop step work?

It primarily targets the quads while also engaging your glutes, hamstrings, and core for balance and stability.

Why step diagonally instead of straight back?

Stepping diagonally challenges your hips and legs from a different angle, which helps improve lateral stability and targets your muscles slightly differently than a standard reverse lunge.

How can I improve my balance during this exercise?

Focus your gaze on a non-moving point in front of you, take a slightly wider diagonal step, and move at a controlled pace.
