Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: dumbbellLevel: beginnerMovement: Lunge

The dumbbell reverse step is a lower body exercise that targets the quadriceps and glutes by stepping backward onto an elevated platform. It develops unilateral leg strength and improves balance and coordination with the added resistance of dumbbells.

How to do it

  1. Stand facing a low step or platform holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. Step backward onto the platform with one foot, then bring the other foot up.
  3. Step back down one foot at a time, returning to the starting position.
  4. Repeat, leading with the opposite foot and continue alternating for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you step backward and lower down, exhale as you push back to the starting position.

Frequently asked questions

Should I feel this in my knees?

You should feel the work in your quads and glutes. If you feel sharp pain in your knees, stop and try a shallower step or bodyweight only.

How high should the step be?

Start with a low platform or a sturdy weight plate. The goal is control, not height.

Can I do this at home?

Yes, if you have a stable platform and dumbbells. Ensure the surface is non-slip.
