Wall Standing Hamstring Stretch

Category: Wall PilatesTarget: hamstringsBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: beginnerMovement: Stretch

The wall standing hamstring stretch is a bodyweight flexibility exercise where one heel is elevated against the wall to create a targeted hamstring stretch in a standing position. The wall supports the foot and provides leverage to deepen the stretch safely.

How to do it

  1. Stand facing the wall and place both hands on it at shoulder height.
  2. Step one foot forward toward the wall and place the heel on the ground with toes raised and resting on the wall.
  3. Keep the front leg straight and lean your torso slightly forward until you feel a stretch in the hamstring.
  4. Hold the stretch for 20-30 seconds.
  5. Switch legs and repeat.

Form cues

Breathing: Take slow, deep breaths. Exhale as you lean forward to help your muscles release tension.

Frequently asked questions

Should my knee be perfectly straight?

Keep your knee straight, but avoid locking it. A tiny 'micro-bend' is fine if you feel sharp pain behind the knee.

Where should I feel the stretch?

You should feel it in the back of your thigh. If you feel it in your lower back, focus on keeping your chest up and hinging from the hips.

How often should I do this?

You can perform this stretch daily, especially after a workout or as part of a morning mobility routine.
