Jump Box Beginners

Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: beginnerMovement: Lunge

Jump box beginners is a low-impact box step-up variation for those new to box training. By stepping rather than jumping, it reduces plyometric impact while still developing coordination, leg strength, and the movement pattern required for full box jumps.

How to do it

  1. Stand in front of a low box or step.
  2. Bend your knees slightly and step one foot onto the box.
  3. Press through the elevated foot to step the other foot up.
  4. Step back down one foot at a time.
  5. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions, alternating the leading foot.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you step up onto the box, and exhale as you lower yourself back down to the floor.

Frequently asked questions

How high should the box be for beginners?

Start with a low step or box where your knee forms roughly a 90-degree angle or less when your foot is placed on top.

Should I alternate legs or finish all reps on one side?

Alternating legs with each step is ideal for beginners to keep your workout balanced and manageable.

What if I feel this in my knees instead of my quads?

Check that your whole foot is planted on the box and avoid leaning your torso too far forward as you step up.
