Icky Shuffle Ladder Drill

Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: intermediateMovement: Gait

The icky shuffle ladder drill is an agility footwork drill that targets the quads and hip abductors while developing coordination, balance, and lateral quickness. The alternating in-and-out pattern challenges neuromuscular control and lower body speed.

How to do it

  1. Set up an agility ladder flat on the ground and stand at one end.
  2. Step your right foot into the first square, then your left foot, then step your right foot out to the right side of the ladder.
  3. Step your left foot into the next square, then your right foot, then step your left foot out to the left side.
  4. Continue down the ladder, alternating the outward step pattern with quick, light feet.
  5. Repeat for the desired number of passes.

Form cues

Breathing: Breathe at a steady, rhythmic pace that matches your foot speed rather than holding your breath.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a physical agility ladder to practice this?

Not necessarily. You can draw lines with chalk outside or use tape on the floor to mimic the squares.

What should I do if I keep tripping over the rungs?

Slow down your pace significantly until your brain and feet learn the pattern, then gradually speed up.

How often can I include this in my routine?

You can use this as part of your warm-up 2 to 3 times per week.
