Box Lateral Shuffle

Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: beginnerMovement: Gait

The box lateral shuffle is an agility and lower body conditioning drill that targets the quadriceps and glutes. It develops lateral quickness and coordination by repeatedly stepping over a low box from side to side in a controlled shuffling pattern.

How to do it

  1. Stand to the side of a low box or platform in an athletic stance.
  2. Step one foot onto the box, then bring the other foot up to meet it.
  3. Step the leading foot down to the other side of the box, followed by the trailing foot.
  4. Immediately reverse the direction, shuffling back to the starting side.
  5. Continue for the desired duration or number of repetitions.

Frequently asked questions

How high should the box be for beginners?

Start with a very low box or platform, around 4 to 6 inches, to focus entirely on footwork and coordination without fatigue.

Can I do this exercise without a box?

Yes, you can perform a standard lateral shuffle on a flat floor by stepping side to side over an imaginary line.

What should I do if my feet keep tripping on the box?

Slow down your pace immediately, focus on picking your feet up higher, and consider lowering the height of the platform until coordination improves.
