Lateral Sprint Shuffles

Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: cardioEquipment: body weightLevel: intermediateMovement: Gait

Lateral sprint shuffles are a bodyweight cardio and agility exercise targeting the quadriceps, with secondary engagement of the glutes, hamstrings, and lower legs. They involve rapid side-to-side shuffling in a low athletic stance to develop lateral speed, footwork, and cardiovascular conditioning.

How to do it

  1. Stand in a low athletic stance with your knees slightly bent and your weight on the balls of your feet.
  2. Push off your inside foot and shuffle laterally in one direction by stepping and bringing your feet together repeatedly.
  3. Keep your hips low and your chest up throughout the movement.
  4. After the desired distance, plant your outside foot and shuffle back in the opposite direction.
  5. Continue shuffling back and forth for the desired duration.

Form cues

Breathing: Breathe steadily and rhythmically through your nose and mouth to match your shuffling pace.

Frequently asked questions

How many days a week should I do lateral sprint shuffles?

2 to 3 sessions per week as part of your cardio or full-body routine is plenty for recovery and progress.

What if I don't have much space at home?

You only need about three to four feet of clear floor space to take two or three quick steps each way.

Should I feel this in my knees?

You should feel your quadriceps and glutes working. If you feel sharp knee joint pain, stop and reduce your speed or depth.
