Dumbbell Jump Squat

Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: dumbbellLevel: intermediateMovement: Squat

The dumbbell jump squat is a plyometric exercise targeting the quadriceps and developing lower body explosive power. Adding light dumbbell resistance increases the training stimulus while the jumping motion improves athleticism and conditioning.

How to do it

  1. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart holding a light dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. Perform a squat by bending your knees and pushing your hips back to thigh-parallel depth.
  3. Explosively drive through your heels to jump off the ground as high as possible.
  4. Land softly with bent knees to absorb the impact.
  5. Immediately descend into the next squat and repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you lower into the squat, and exhale forcefully as you drive upward into the jump.

Frequently asked questions

How heavy should the dumbbells be?

Start very light. The goal is explosive power, not heavy lifting. If the weights slow down your jump significantly, they are too heavy.

Can I do this exercise without weights?

Yes, bodyweight jump squats are a great alternative if you want to focus entirely on height and form without extra load.

Why do my knees hurt when I land?

Knee discomfort usually happens when landing stiff-legged. Focus on bending your knees deeply and rolling through your feet to absorb the shock.
