Dumbbell Goblet Squat

Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: dumbbellLevel: beginnerMovement: Squat

The dumbbell goblet squat is a lower body exercise targeting the quadriceps. Holding the dumbbell at chest height encourages an upright torso and proper squat mechanics, making it an excellent teaching tool and effective quad builder.

How to do it

  1. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart holding a dumbbell vertically at chest level with both hands cupping the top end.
  2. Keep your elbows tucked in and your chest up.
  3. Descend into a squat by bending your knees and pushing your hips back until your thighs are parallel to the floor.
  4. Drive through your heels to return to the standing position.
  5. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale deeply as you lower into the squat, and exhale forcefully as you drive upward to return to standing.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I feel this exercise?

You should primarily feel the work in your quadriceps (front of the thighs) and glutes. You may also feel your core working to keep your torso upright.

What if I don't have a dumbbell?

You can use a kettlebell, a heavy water bottle, or any weighted object that is easy to hold securely at your chest.

How deep should I squat?

Aim to lower until your thighs are parallel to the floor, but only go as deep as you can while maintaining a flat back and keeping your heels on the ground.
