Wall One Leg Squat

Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: intermediateMovement: Squat

Wall one leg squat is a bodyweight unilateral exercise targeting the quads. The wall provides back support during the single-leg squat, reducing balance demands and allowing a focus on quad strength and knee tracking.

How to do it

  1. Stand with your back against a wall and feet hip-width apart a foot from the wall.
  2. Lift one foot off the ground and extend that leg in front of you.
  3. Slide your back down the wall by bending your standing leg into a single-leg squat.
  4. Descend as far as comfortable while maintaining control.
  5. Press through your standing heel to return to the starting position before switching legs.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you slowly lower your body down the wall, and exhale as you press through your heel to return to the starting position.

Frequently asked questions

What if I cannot go very low on one leg?

That is completely normal. Only descend as far as you can while maintaining control and keeping good form.

Can I do this exercise without a wall?

The wall provides essential back support and reduces balance demands for this variation. If you remove the wall, it becomes a standard pistol or single-leg squat.

Where should I feel this exercise?

You should primarily feel your quads working hard, along with some engagement in your glutes.
