Star Balance

Category: Home PilatesTarget: absBody part: waistEquipment: body weightLevel: advancedMovement: Balance

The star balance is an advanced Pilates bodyweight exercise targeting the abdominal muscles and obliques. Performed as an elevated side plank with the top arm and leg raised, it challenges lateral core stability, balance, and full-body coordination.

How to do it

  1. Begin in a side plank position with your supporting hand or forearm on the mat and your body in a straight line.
  2. Stack your feet and lift your hips off the mat.
  3. Raise your top arm toward the ceiling and lift your top leg, forming a star shape.
  4. Hold this position, engaging your core and obliques to maintain balance.
  5. Lower your arm and leg with control and return to the side plank position.
  6. Switch sides and repeat.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale to prepare and exhale steadily as you lift into the star shape, maintaining a consistent flow of air throughout the hold.

Frequently asked questions

What if I feel this in my shoulder instead of my abs?

Ensure your supporting hand is directly under your shoulder and you are actively pushing the floor away rather than sinking into the joint.

Can I do this on my forearm?

Yes, performing this on your forearm is a great way to reduce wrist strain while still challenging your core stability.

How often should I practice this?

As an advanced movement, 2–3 times per week is plenty to allow for recovery and progress.
