Squat with Arm Reach

Category: Home PilatesTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: beginnerMovement: Squat

Squat with arm reach is a Pilates-inspired bodyweight exercise targeting the quadriceps and glutes. The simultaneous arm reach counterbalances the squat and improves posture awareness, building lower body strength and shoulder mobility in one integrated movement.

How to do it

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and arms by your sides.
  2. Engage your core and begin to lower into a squat, pushing your hips back and bending your knees.
  3. As you descend, reach both arms forward at shoulder height.
  4. Pause at the bottom of the squat with your thighs parallel to the floor.
  5. Press through your heels and return to standing while lowering your arms.
  6. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you lower into the squat, and exhale as you press back up to standing.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I feel this exercise?

You should feel the work primarily in your thighs (quads) and glutes, with a light stretch in your shoulders.

Do I have to squat all the way down?

Only go as deep as you can while keeping your heels on the floor and your chest upright. Quality of movement is more important than depth.

Can I do this if I have tight shoulders?

Yes, just reach your arms to a comfortable height. Focus on the leg movement first.
