Plyo Step Up

Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: intermediateMovement: Lunge

The plyo step up is a plyometric lower body exercise that targets the quadriceps and glutes through explosive step-up movements on an elevated platform. It develops unilateral leg power, coordination, and cardiovascular conditioning.

How to do it

  1. Stand in front of a sturdy plyo box or bench.
  2. Step one foot onto the box and explosively drive through that heel to jump upward.
  3. Switch feet in the air so the opposite foot lands on the box.
  4. Immediately step or jump back down and repeat, alternating the leading foot.
  5. Continue for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you step down into position, and exhale sharply as you drive upward and switch feet.

Frequently asked questions

How high should the box be?

Start with a low box or sturdy platform where your knee forms roughly a 90-degree angle when your foot is planted on top.

Can I do these without jumping?

Yes, if you want lower impact, simply perform standard alternating step-ups without the explosive switch in the air.

What should I do if my knees hurt?

Ease off immediately, check your landing mechanics to ensure soft absorption, or switch to a lower-impact movement like a standard step-up.
