Lean Forward Hip Abduction

Category: WorkoutsTarget: glutesBody part: upper legsEquipment: leverage machineLevel: beginnerMovement: Hinge

The lean forward hip abduction is a variation of the machine hip abduction that shifts emphasis toward the gluteus maximus by leaning the torso forward. This positional change alters the angle of hip abduction and increases glute engagement.

How to do it

  1. Sit on a hip abduction machine and lean your torso forward slightly, resting your chest on your thighs.
  2. Adjust the pads to rest against the outside of your knees.
  3. Push your legs outward against the pads in a controlled motion.
  4. Pause at the widest point and squeeze your outer glutes.
  5. Slowly return your legs to the starting position and repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Exhale as you push your legs outward, and inhale as you return to the starting position.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need to lean forward during hip abduction?

Leaning your torso forward changes the angle of your hip joint, which places more emphasis on your gluteus maximus.

What should I do if I feel this mostly in my outer thighs?

Make sure your chest stays in contact with your thighs and focus on initiating the push from your outer glutes rather than your knees.

How often can I include this exercise in my routine?

You can safely perform this movement 2 to 3 times per week with at least a rest day between sessions.
