Hip Abduction

Category: WorkoutsTarget: hip abductorsBody part: upper legsEquipment: leverage machineLevel: beginnerMovement: Gait

The hip abduction machine exercise targets the hip abductors and outer glutes. By pushing the legs outward against resistance, it isolates the gluteus medius and tensor fasciae latae, which are important for hip stability and injury prevention.

How to do it

  1. Sit on a hip abduction machine and adjust the pads to rest against the outside of your knees.
  2. Sit upright with your back flat against the seat and your feet on the footrests.
  3. Push your legs outward against the pads, spreading them as wide as comfortable.
  4. Pause at the widest point and squeeze your outer glutes.
  5. Slowly bring your legs back together and repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Exhale as you push your legs outward against the resistance, and inhale as you slowly bring them back together.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I feel this exercise?

You should feel the work primarily in your outer glutes and the sides of your hips. If you feel it in your lower back, check that your torso is pressed firmly against the seat.

How often can I do hip abductions?

2 to 3 times per week is plenty for most beginners, allowing your muscles adequate time to recover between sessions.

Can I do this exercise without a machine?

Yes, bodyweight movements like fire hydrants or side-lying leg raises are great home alternatives that target the same muscle groups.
