Incline Sit-up + Rotation

Category: WorkoutsTarget: absBody part: waistEquipment: body weightLevel: intermediateMovement: Core

The incline sit-up with rotation is a rotational core exercise combining an incline sit-up with an alternating torso twist at the peak. The rotation increases the oblique engagement alongside the primary rectus abdominis work from the incline sit-up.

How to do it

  1. Lie on an incline bench with your head at the lower end and your feet secured.
  2. Place your hands behind your head.
  3. Curl your torso up and rotate to one side at the top of the movement.
  4. Lower back to the starting position and repeat with a rotation to the other side.
  5. Continue alternating rotations for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Exhale as you curl up and twist toward the top, and inhale as you lower yourself back down.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I feel this exercise?

You should feel your abdominal muscles working throughout the lift and a strong contraction in your obliques as you twist at the top.

What if my lower back hurts?

If you feel discomfort in your lower back, stop immediately and try a gentler movement like a standard crunch or a flat floor twist.

How often can I do incline sit-up with rotation?

2 to 3 times per week is plenty for recovery, allowing your core muscles time to rest and adapt.
