Side to Side Crunch

Category: WorkoutsTarget: obliquesBody part: waistEquipment: body weightLevel: beginnerMovement: Core

The side to side crunch is a bodyweight exercise that targets the obliques through lateral flexion. Alternating the crunch direction to each side creates a comprehensive oblique workout that improves lateral core strength.

How to do it

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.
  2. Place your hands behind your head with your elbows pointing out.
  3. Curl your upper body up and to the right, bringing your right elbow toward your right knee.
  4. Lower back to the starting position and repeat to the left side.
  5. Continue alternating sides for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Exhale as you crunch up and to the side, and inhale as you return to the center.

Frequently asked questions

Will side to side crunches spot-reduce belly fat?

No single exercise can target fat loss in one specific area. This movement strengthens and tones the oblique muscles underneath.

Why does my neck hurt when I do these?

Neck pain usually happens when you pull on your head with your hands. Support your head lightly with your fingers and lift with your upper chest.

How often should I do core exercises?

Doing core work 2 to 3 times per week allows for adequate muscle recovery while building strength over time.
