Fold Piriformis Relief

Category: YogaTarget: glutesBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: beginnerMovement: Stretch

Fold piriformis relief is a seated forward fold variation that targets the glutes and piriformis muscle to release deep hip tension. It combines a figure-four position with a forward fold, intensifying the external hip rotation stretch compared to the supine version.

How to do it

  1. Sit on the floor with both legs extended in front of you.
  2. Bend your right knee and cross your right ankle over your left thigh just above the knee.
  3. Flex your right foot to protect the knee joint.
  4. Hinge forward from the hips, folding your torso over both legs until you feel a deep stretch in your right glute.
  5. Hold the stretch for 30-60 seconds, breathing deeply into the hip, then slowly return to seated and repeat on the other side.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale to lengthen your spine, exhale as you slowly hinge forward into the stretch.
