Couch Forward Lunges

Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: intermediateMovement: Lunge

The couch forward lunge is a bodyweight split squat variation that elevates the rear foot on a couch or bench. The elevated rear foot increases the stretch on the hip flexors and increases the range of motion available to the front leg, intensifying the quad and glute activation.

How to do it

  1. Stand facing away from a couch or elevated surface.
  2. Place one foot behind you on the couch, with the top of your foot resting on the surface.
  3. Step the front foot forward far enough to allow a lunge with good form.
  4. Bend your front knee and lower your hips toward the floor in a lunge.
  5. Return to standing and repeat for the desired reps before switching legs.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you lower your hips toward the floor, and exhale as you push back up to the starting position.

Frequently asked questions

What if I feel this more in my back hip than my front leg?

That is completely normal. Elevating your rear foot creates a deep stretch across the hip flexor of the back leg. If it feels too intense, try a lower surface like a stable chair instead of a couch.

How do I keep my balance during the movement?

Take your time setting your stance width. Instead of placing your front foot directly in front of your rear foot, keep a little bit of horizontal space between them, as if you are standing on railroad tracks.

Can I do this exercise without a couch?

Yes, you can perform standard forward lunges or reverse lunges on the floor if you do not have a suitable elevated surface nearby.
