Control balance is an advanced Pilates bodyweight exercise targeting the abdominal muscles and posterior chain. Performed in an inverted position with one leg overhead and one extended toward the ceiling, it demands exceptional core control, balance, and hamstring flexibility.

How to do it

  1. Lie flat on your back and roll your legs overhead until your toes touch the mat behind your head.
  2. Support your lower back with your hands or press your arms into the mat.
  3. Raise one leg vertically toward the ceiling while the other remains extended behind your head.
  4. Hold for a moment, then switch legs in a controlled scissoring motion.
  5. Continue alternating for the desired number of repetitions, then slowly roll back down to the mat.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you prepare and scissor your legs, exhale deeply as you reach and extend to stabilize your core.

Frequently asked questions

Is this safe for beginners?

This is an advanced movement. If you are new to Pilates, start with foundational core exercises to build the necessary strength first.

Why do I feel this in my neck?

You may be putting weight on your head instead of your shoulder blades and arms. Keep your neck neutral and focus on supporting your weight with your upper back.

Can I do this if I have tight hamstrings?

Tight hamstrings may make this difficult. Prioritize stretching and mobility work before attempting this inverted position.
