Cable Standing Chest Press

Category: WorkoutsTarget: pectoralsBody part: chestEquipment: cableLevel: intermediateMovement: Push

The cable standing chest press is a cable compound exercise targeting the pectoral muscles in a standing position. Standing rather than lying on a bench increases core demand and allows a more natural pressing arc.

How to do it

  1. Set two cable pulleys to chest height and attach handles to each side.
  2. Stand in the center of the machine and grasp one handle in each hand at chest level.
  3. Step forward slightly for stability and brace your core.
  4. Press both handles forward until your arms are fully extended in front of you.
  5. Slowly return the handles back to chest level.
  6. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Exhale as you press the handles forward, and inhale in a controlled manner as you bring them back to your chest.

Frequently asked questions

What if I feel this more in my shoulders than my chest?

Try rolling your shoulders back and down before you start, and focus on squeezing your chest muscles together as you press forward.

Can I do this exercise without a cable machine?

Yes, you can use resistance bands anchored securely behind you to mimic the same pressing motion.

How often should I include this in my routine?

One to two times per week, with at least 48 hours of rest between upper-body pressing sessions, is plenty for most beginners.
