Cable Crossover (High to Low)

Category: WorkoutsTarget: chestBody part: chestEquipment: cableLevel: intermediateMovement: Push

The cable crossover from high to low is a cable exercise targeting the lower and inner chest. The downward arc emphasizes the lower pectoral fibers and provides constant tension, making it effective for chest shaping and definition.

How to do it

  1. Set both pulleys on a cable machine to the high position and attach single handles to each.
  2. Stand in the center of the machine and grasp a handle in each hand.
  3. Step forward slightly with one foot for stability and lean forward slightly at the hips.
  4. With a slight bend in your elbows, pull the handles downward and inward in an arcing motion until they meet in front of your hips.
  5. Slowly return the handles to the starting position and repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you slowly return the handles to the starting position, and exhale as you pull them downward and inward.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I feel this exercise more in my shoulders than my chest?

This usually happens if your arms bend and straighten too much during the arc or if you are using too much weight. Focus on keeping a fixed bend in your elbows and leading with your chest.

How often can I include high-to-low cable crossovers in my routine?

1 to 2 times per week is plenty for most beginners, allowing at least 48 hours of recovery between chest sessions.

Can I do this exercise without a cable machine?

Cable machines provide constant tension that dumbbells or resistance bands cannot fully replicate, but bands anchored at a high point can serve as a similar option.
