Barbell Kickback

Category: WorkoutsTarget: glutesBody part: upper legsEquipment: barbellLevel: intermediateMovement: Hinge

The barbell kickback is a glute isolation exercise performed using a landmine or anchored barbell. Loading resistance onto the foot during a kickback motion increases glute and hamstring activation compared to bodyweight alternatives.

How to do it

  1. Load a barbell in a landmine attachment or anchor it at one end against a stable surface.
  2. Kneel on all fours and place one foot in the collar or sleeve of the barbell.
  3. Engage your core and keep your spine neutral.
  4. Drive your foot back and upward, extending your hip fully and squeezing your glute at the top.
  5. Slowly return to the starting position and repeat for the desired repetitions before switching legs.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you lower the barbell back to the start position, and exhale steadily as you press your foot upward.

Can I do this exercise without a landmine attachment?

Yes, you can wedge one end of the barbell into a safe, heavy corner or use cables and resistance bands as simpler alternatives.

How often should I train my glutes with kickbacks?

Two to three sessions per week with at least one rest day between sessions is a great starting point for recovery.
