Band Squat

Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: resistance bandLevel: beginnerMovement: Squat

The band squat adds a resistance band around the knees to increase glute activation and correct knee cave during a standard squat pattern. It is effective for reinforcing proper squat mechanics and building lower body strength.

How to do it

  1. Place a resistance band just above your knees and stand with feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Push your knees outward against the band to activate your glutes.
  3. Lower into a squat by pushing your hips back and bending your knees.
  4. Keep your chest tall and knees tracking outward against the band resistance.
  5. Press through your heels to return to standing.
  6. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you lower down into the squat, and exhale steadily as you press back up to the starting position.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I feel the band squat working?

You should feel it working your thighs and outer glutes as you fight the pull of the band.

How thick should my resistance band be?

Start with a light or medium loop band so you can maintain proper form without your knees caving in.

Can I do this exercise every day?

It is generally fine to do a few times a week, but listen to your body and take rest days if your muscles feel sore.
