Zottman Curl

Category: WorkoutsTarget: bicepsBody part: upper armsEquipment: dumbbellLevel: intermediateMovement: Pull

The zottman curl is a dumbbell exercise that targets the biceps on the way up and the forearm extensors and brachialis on the way down by rotating the wrist at the top. It is one of the most efficient exercises for developing complete arm thickness.

How to do it

  1. Stand holding dumbbells at your sides with palms facing forward.
  2. Curl the dumbbells upward toward your shoulders as in a standard curl.
  3. At the top of the movement, rotate your wrists so your palms face downward.
  4. Slowly lower the dumbbells in this pronated position.
  5. At the bottom, rotate your wrists back to the supinated starting position.
  6. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Exhale as you curl the dumbbells up toward your shoulders, and inhale steadily as you lower them back down.

Frequently asked questions

Why should I rotate my wrists during a zottman curl?

Rotating your palms downward at the top shifts the workload on the way down to your forearms and brachialis, making the exercise more efficient for overall arm development.

What weight should I start with?

Because the lowering phase involves the forearms and uses a different grip, start with lighter dumbbells than you would normally use for a standard bicep curl.

How often can I include this in my workouts?

You can safely perform this movement 2 to 3 times per week, allowing at least 48 hours of recovery between upper body sessions.
