Category: Wall PilatesTarget: upper backBody part: backEquipment: body weightLevel: beginnerMovement: Stretch

Wall standing upper back stretch version 1 is a bodyweight flexibility exercise targeting the upper back and shoulders. With hands pressed into the wall and the torso hinged forward, the stretch lengthens the muscles along the thoracic spine and shoulder girdle.

How to do it

  1. Stand facing the wall and place both hands flat against it at shoulder height.
  2. Walk your feet back until your arms are fully extended and your torso is bent at approximately 45 degrees.
  3. Press your hands into the wall and allow your chest to sink toward the floor, rounding your upper back.
  4. Hold the stretched position for 20-30 seconds.
  5. Walk your feet back toward the wall and return to standing.
