Supported Single-leg Balance

Category: Office FitTarget: calvesBody part: lower legsEquipment: body weightLevel: beginnerMovement: Balance

The supported single-leg balance is a bodyweight balance exercise targeting the calf muscles, performed with light support from a desk or chair. It involves standing on one leg to challenge the stabilizing muscles of the lower leg, engage the glutes and core, and develop proprioception and balance.

How to do it

  1. Stand behind your desk or chair and hold onto it lightly with both hands for initial stability.
  2. Shift your weight onto one foot and slowly lift the other foot off the floor, bending the knee slightly.
  3. Gradually reduce your grip on the support until you are balancing primarily on the standing leg.
  4. Hold the single-leg balance for 20-30 seconds, focusing your gaze on a fixed point ahead to maintain stability.
  5. Return both feet to the floor, rest briefly, then switch legs and repeat.

Form cues
