Biceps Isolation Curl

Category: WorkoutsTarget: bicepsBody part: upper armsEquipment: dumbbellLevel: beginnerMovement: Pull

The biceps isolation curl is a dumbbell exercise that removes the contribution of the shoulder and core, placing full tension on the biceps. By bracing the upper arm against a surface, it effectively targets the biceps brachii for maximum isolation.

How to do it

  1. Sit on a preacher bench or rest your upper arm on the inside of your thigh to isolate the bicep.
  2. Hold a dumbbell in one hand with a supinated grip, arm fully extended.
  3. Curl the dumbbell upward toward your shoulder, keeping your upper arm stationary.
  4. Squeeze your bicep at the top of the movement.
  5. Slowly lower the dumbbell back to the starting position and repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Exhale as you curl the weight upward toward your shoulder, and inhale as you slowly lower it back to the starting position.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my upper arm lifting off the support pad?

This usually happens when the weight is too heavy or you are trying to use momentum. Lower the weight and focus on keeping your upper arm completely still.

How often can I do biceps isolation curls?

2 to 3 times per week with at least one rest day between sessions is a great starting point for recovery and growth.

Should I feel this in my forearms?

It is normal to feel some mild forearm engagement as you grip the dumbbell, but if your forearms are doing all the work, try keeping your wrists firmer.
