Warrior 1 Alignment

Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: beginnerMovement: Lunge

Warrior 1 alignment is a bodyweight yoga exercise targeting the quadriceps, with secondary engagement of the glutes, hamstrings, and shoulders. It involves holding a deep lunge position with arms raised overhead to simultaneously strengthen the lower body, open the hip flexors, and develop postural awareness.

How to do it

  1. Step one foot forward into a wide lunge, keeping your front knee bent at approximately 90 degrees directly over your ankle.
  2. Turn your back foot out at a 45-degree angle and press through the outer edge of that foot.
  3. Square your hips toward the front of the mat as much as possible.
  4. Raise both arms overhead with palms facing each other and draw your shoulders down away from your ears.
  5. Hold for 20-30 seconds while breathing steadily, then switch sides.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale to lengthen your spine and reach your arms up, and exhale to settle deeper into your front lunge.
