Standing It Band Stretch – Towel

Category: WorkoutsTarget: adductorsBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: beginnerMovement: Stretch

The standing IT band stretch using a towel is a bodyweight lateral stretch targeting the iliotibial band and outer hip muscles. Crossing one foot behind the other and leaning with the towel overhead provides a controlled elongation of the IT band and surrounding hip structures.

How to do it

  1. Stand upright and hold a towel in both hands stretched above your head.
  2. Cross one foot behind the other and lean your torso to the side of the rear leg.
  3. Reach the towel overhead toward the same side to deepen the lateral stretch.
  4. Hold for 20–30 seconds, feeling the stretch along the outer hip and thigh.
  5. Return to standing and repeat on the other side.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale deeply as you stand tall, and exhale slowly as you lean into the stretch to help release tension.

You can safely practice this stretch daily, especially after a walk, run, or lower-body workout.

Do I need a special towel for this?

Any standard hand towel or bath towel that allows you to hold your arms comfortably overhead will work.
