Standing Hamstring

Category: WorkoutsTarget: hamstringsBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: beginnerMovement: Stretch

The standing hamstring stretch is a bodyweight exercise targeting the hamstrings. Performed standing with one heel extended forward, a controlled forward hip hinge creates a focused stretch along the back of the thigh and calf, improving posterior chain flexibility and posture.

How to do it

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart and your arms at your sides.
  2. Extend one leg slightly forward and place the heel on the ground with the toes pointing up.
  3. Hinge forward at the hips, keeping your back flat, and reach both hands toward the toes of the extended leg.
  4. Hold the stretch for 20-30 seconds, feeling tension in the back of the thigh.
  5. Return to the starting position and repeat on the opposite leg.
  6. Continue alternating sides for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale as you stand tall, and exhale slowly as you hinge forward into the stretch.

Frequently asked questions

Should my front leg be completely straight?

It is best to keep a very soft bend in your front knee. Locking the joint out can cause discomfort and does not improve the stretch.

What if I cannot reach my toes?

That is completely normal for beginners. Simply reach as far as comfortable while keeping your back flat, or rest your hands on your bent thigh.

How often should I do this stretch?

You can safely perform this stretch daily, especially after a short walk or light warm-up when your muscles are warm.
