Squat Down Bottle Hold

Category: WorkoutsTarget: quadsBody part: upper legsEquipment: body weightLevel: beginnerMovement: Squat

The squat down bottle hold is a squat variation where a water bottle is held and lowered toward the floor at the bottom of each squat. The downward reach increases the forward hip hinge and deepens the posterior chain activation at the bottom of the movement.

How to do it

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a water bottle with both hands pointing downward.
  2. Lower into a squat and tap the bottle to the floor at the bottom.
  3. Drive through your heels to return to standing.
  4. Keep your chest tall and back neutral throughout.
  5. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Inhale steadily as you lower into the squat, and exhale firmly as you push back up to the starting position.

Frequently asked questions

What if I cannot touch the bottle to the floor?

That is completely fine. Only go as low as your comfortable range of motion allows without rounding your back.

How heavy should the water bottle be?

Start with a light or partially filled bottle to master the form before using a heavier weight.

Can I do this exercise every day?

It is best to allow 24 to 48 hours of recovery between lower body sessions to let your muscles repair.
