Machine Pec Deck Fly

Category: WorkoutsTarget: pectoralsBody part: chestEquipment: machineLevel: beginnerMovement: Push

The machine pec deck fly is a chest isolation exercise targeting the pectorals through a controlled adduction movement. The guided machine path allows beginners to safely overload the chest while reducing shoulder joint stress compared to free weight flyes.

How to do it

  1. Sit at the pec deck machine and adjust the seat so the handles are at shoulder height.
  2. Grasp the handles with elbows slightly bent and upper arms parallel to the floor.
  3. Squeeze your pectorals and bring your arms toward each other in a hugging motion.
  4. Pause at the fully contracted position, holding the contraction briefly.
  5. Slowly allow your arms to return to the starting position.
  6. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Form cues

Breathing: Exhale as you squeeze the handles together, and inhale slowly as you return your arms to the starting position.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I feel this exercise?

You should feel a strong contraction in the center and outer parts of your chest muscles. If you feel it mostly in your shoulders, try keeping your elbows slightly lower and chest lifted.

Can I do this if I have shoulder discomfort?

If you experience sharp pain or discomfort in your shoulder joints, stop immediately and choose a pressing movement or consult a professional.

How often can I include the pec deck in my routine?

1 to 2 times per week is plenty for most beginners, allowing at least 48 hours of recovery between upper body sessions.
