Dumbbell Shrugs

Category: WorkoutsTarget: trapsBody part: backEquipment: dumbbellLevel: beginner

Dumbbell shrugs are an isolation exercise that targets the upper trapezius muscles. The upward shrugging motion against loaded dumbbells builds trap size and thickness, improving shoulder and neck aesthetics and upper body stability.

How to do it

  1. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. Let your arms hang naturally and keep your chest tall and core engaged.
  3. Shrug your shoulders straight upward toward your ears as high as possible.
  4. Pause briefly at the top, squeezing your traps.
  5. Slowly lower your shoulders back to the starting position and repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Muscles worked

Primary: traps. Secondary: neck, forearms.
